Block Panchayat

Koipuram Block Panchayat is located in the Mallappally, Thiruvalla, and Ranni taluks of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. The block comprises the grama panchayats of Ayiroor, Iraviperur, Koipuram, Thottapuzhassery, Ezhumattoor, and Puramattom. Spread across the villages of Ayiroor, Iraviperur, Koipuram, Thottapuzhassery, Ezhumattoor, Thelliyoor, and Puramattom, Koipuram Block Panchayat covers an area of 123.67 square kilometres.

Each village in Koipuram Block Panchayat has a unique story behind its name. Ayiroor was originally known as "Ayyan Oor" (the village of Lord Ayyappa) because of the temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa situated on a hilltop. Over time, the name evolved into Ayiroor.

Iraviperur was once the administrative region of the renowned King Iravi of the Pazhoor royal dynasty. It was initially known as Iravipuram, which later transformed into Iraviperur.

Koipuram was a territory governed by the local chieftains known as the Kovilans. It was originally called "Kovilpuram", meaning the land of the temple, and gradually evolved into Koipuram.

Thottapuzhassery is believed to have derived its name from the presence of streams (thodu), rivers (puzha), and the surrounding settlement (cheri).

The name Ezhumattoor is thought to have originated from the phrase "Ezhima Utta Oor," meaning the village blessed with prosperity, where Ezhima signifies wealth and abundance.

Puramattom was originally known as "Puramuttam," meaning the outer courtyard. With the passage of time, the name gradually changed to Puramattom.

Based on its physical geography, Koipuram Block Panchayat can be classified into hills, slopes, valleys, paddy fields, plains, hill slopes, riverbanks, and rocky terrain.

The Pamba River and the Manimala River flow through the block, shaping its landscape. The low-lying areas along the banks of these rivers are fertile plains, making them highly suitable for agriculture.

The region is characterized by a variety of soil types, including gravelly soils, silty clay soils, fertile alluvial soils, red soils, clay soils, and lateritic soils, all of which contribute to the area's rich agricultural productivity.
